It is a neat, sturdy, compact rubble bridge with three spans and triangular cutwaters built still. If you can get down beside the river you will see the central span is not only the largest but also the shallowest. The south side arch, springing from the same level on the pier is forced into a steeper curve. Telford built the spandrel walls hollow, with cross-ways strengthening bars, and, by thus reducing the weight, he was able to have narrower piers. [1]
