Railway bridge incorporating gateway into the grounds of Guthrie Castle. A compromise solution by the Arbroath & Forfar Railway between the demands of the turnpike road trustees, who objected to the course of the railway crossing the road and Mr Guthrie of Guthrie Castle who would not allow the railway above ground within 10ft of his estate. The compromise involved the creation of a new gateway, almost folly-like in its construction. The eventual building incorporated both elements, so that the gate carries the railway across itself. The structure is a Tudor-gothic vaulted gateway under railway surmounted by a battlemented parapet and flanked by octagonal towers and curved screen walls. It was constructed c.1838. The arch is in the perpendicular style, with dripstone moulding. The gateway is still used as an entrance to Guthrie Castle. [SMR]
